"Don't Stand So Shut to Me" is a striking song by the stone band The Police, released in September 1980 equally the pb single from their third album Zenyatta Mondatta. It concerns a teacher who has a sexual relationship with a student, which in plow is discovered.

The band'due south third No. i on the Great britain Singles Chart, it was also the best selling single of 1980 in the UK.[2] [3] The song also charted in the tiptop ten in Australia, Canada and the US. The Police won the 1982 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Grouping with Vocal for this song.[4]

Groundwork [edit]

The music and lyrics of the song were written by the lead singer of The Constabulary, Sting. The song deals with the mixed feelings of animalism, fear and guilt that a schoolhouse instructor has for a student and the fallout when the inappropriate sexual relationship is discovered past other adults. The line But like the old human in that book past Nabokov alludes to Vladimir Nabokov's novel Lolita, which covers somewhat similar bug.[5] The line was criticised for rhyming milkshake and coughing with Nabokov. [six] Sting replied, "I've used that terrible, terrible rhyme technique a few times."[six]

Before joining The Police, Sting had previously worked every bit an English teacher.[vi] His recollection was that he'd "been through the concern of having 15-year-sometime girls fancying me - and my really fancying them! How I kept my hands off them I don't know."[half dozen] He referred to the song'southward story progression as "the instructor, the open page, the virgin, the rape in the car, getting the sack."[6]

In 1993, however, he said of the vocal's inspiration, "You accept to think we were blond bombshells at the time and most of our fans were young girls then I started role playing a bit. Let's exploit that."[6] In a 2001 interview for the concert DVD ...All This Time, Sting denied that the song is autobiographical.[ citation needed ]

Production [edit]

"Don't Stand So Close to Me" appeared on The Constabulary's album Zenyatta Mondatta (A&M), and became a hit No. 1 UK single,[seven] forth with a respective music video. In the US, it reached the elevation 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at No. ten. In the Great britain, the rail was confirmed past the terminate of 1980 to accept been the biggest selling single of that year.[ commendation needed ]

The B-side, "Friends", was written past Andy Summers and is inspired by Stranger in a Strange Land, a science fiction novel by Robert A. Heinlein.[6] Summers described the track equally "Very quirky. A touch of Long John Silver on Acid."[6]

Sting was asked to perform on Mark Knopfler's "Money for Aught" every bit he was in Montserrat at the time, and accidentally reused the tune from "Don't Stand So Close to Me" in the counterpoint lyric "I desire my MTV." It was only subsequently this story was relayed to reporters during promotions for the Brothers in Arms album that lawyers for Sting became involved, and later copies of the album co-credit the song to Sting. The initial pressings list but Knopfler. It is one of only 2 shared songwriting credits on any Dire Straits album.[ citation needed ]

Composition [edit]

"Don't Stand So Close to Me" features Sting on pb vocals. Like many Constabulary songs, the verses are more than subdued, while the chorus is bolder and louder. The song too bears a reggae mode, withal another common trait in Police songs. Thematically, the "wet motorbus stop" idea invites comparing with the 1966 striking song "Jitney Stop" past some other English language grouping, The Hollies.[ citation needed ]

The track uses a guitar synthesizer in the middle of the song, which was used by guitarist Andy Summers. Summers said, "Subsequently Sting had put the vocals on 'Don't Stand And so Close To Me' nosotros looked for something to lift the middle of the vocal. I came upward with a guitar synthesiser. Information technology was the get-go fourth dimension nosotros'd used information technology. I felt it worked actually well."[half-dozen] The verses and choruses do not feature this upshot.[six]

The verses are in the key of Grand minor, and the chorus is in D major.[8]

The song was re-recorded in 1986 with a new, heart-searching arrangement, a dissimilar chorus and a more opulent production. Because of the subtract in tempo, a slight lyric change is institute in the line "Just similar the one-time man in that volume by Nabokov" (the word 'famous' was added). A new music video was produced for the reworked vocal past Godley and Creme, notable for its early use of animated calculator graphics. The version of the song used on the music video was subtly different to the version released every bit the single. It was approximately six seconds shorter, with a longer atmospheric suspension before the showtime lyric, but role of the chorus edited out towards the end. This version is only available on the music video, information technology has never been separately released as an audio recording.

Because drummer Stewart Copeland had broken his collarbone and was unable to drum, he opted to apply his Fairlight CMI to plan the drum track for the single, while singer/bassist Sting pushed to use the drums on his Synclavier instead. The group's engineer establish the Synclavier's programming interface difficult; information technology concluded upwards taking him ii days to complete the task. Copeland ultimately finished the drum programming and claimed that the Fairlight'south and so-legendary "Page R" (the device'south sequencing page) saved his life and put him on the map as a composer. In a Qantas inflight radio program named "Reeling in the Years", Copeland was quoted equally proverb that the argument over Synclavier versus Fairlight drums was "the straw that broke the camel's back," and that this led to the group's unravelling.[ commendation needed ]

Every bit the Police had already disbanded past the fourth dimension the 1986 single was released, this, aside from the so-unreleased "De Do Practice Practice, De Da Da Da '86," was the last recording before the band's reunion and the most contempo studio recording the ring has released.
